Facts About the Builder’s Licensing Process

Builder license examinations are given electronically at test sites in Southfield, Dearborn, Grand Rapids, Gaylord, Marquette and Lansing. The exam is given by PSI of Las Vegas, NV for the Michigan Department of Commerce. Call 1-800-733-9267 for an application and scheduling information for tests. Applications will be available at our Pre-License classes. You can also schedule online at http://www.psiexams.com.

You must first apply to the State of Michigan for approval to take the test. You must complete the application form; include a copy of the “Completion Certificate” issued by Oakland Builders & Education Seminars (OBES) as well as photo identification is required. The state will send a notification to you and PSI that you are approved and eligible to take the test. You are then responsible for contacting PSI to schedule at your preferred testing site location.
There will be a continuing education requirement of seven hours per year, depending upon when your license was issued. Ongoing continuing education courses will be available from OBES, add www.buildersinstitute.com to your “Favorites” for easy reference.
Once you have your license you will need the current Michigan Residential Code Book.
