Licensing Information

Facts About The Builder’s Licensing Process

Builder license examinations are given electronically at test sites in Southfield, Grand Rapids, Gaylord, Marquette and Lansing. The exam is given by PSI of Las Vegas, NV for the Michigan Department of Commerce. Call 1-800-733-9267 for an application and scheduling information for tests. Applications will be available at our Pre-License classes. You can also schedule online at http://www.psiexams.com.

You may fax your application with credit card information to PSI at (702)-932-2666.

You must first apply to the State of Michigan for approval to take the test.  You must complete the application form; include a copy of the “Completion Certificate” issued by Oakland Builders & Education Seminars (OBES) as well as photo identification is required. The state will send a notification to you and PSI that you are approved and eligible to take the test.  You are then responsible for contacting PSI to schedule at your preferred testing site location.

There will be a continuing competency requirement of seven hours per year, depending upon when your license was issued.  For more information on continuing competency requirements, go to www.michigan.gov/builders.  Ongoing continuing competency courses will be available from OBES, add www.buildersinstitute.com to your “Favorites” for easy reference.

The State of Michigan will pull a credit report as part of their process.

The test consists of 50 business and law questions and 100 practice/trade questions. Applicants have 75 minutes to complete the business and law section and 150 minutes to complete the practice/trade section of the test.

If you miss one of our classes for any reason or wish to retake the class, you may do so as long as the class can be found on the OBES class schedule/calendar.  Please feel free to call or send an e-mail request for additional information.  For class preparation purposes, we require advance notification if you are planning to attend a class. Please do not just show up!

Should you elect to retake a class or retake part of a seminar, your request must be submitted to OBES within six months of your completion of the pre-license class.  In some instances, there may be a charge for class materials.

Please bring a basic non-programmable calculator to the class with pen/pencil.  Students are expected to study at least an additional 16 hours or more on their own following completion of the class.  This will allow full preparation for completing the exam successfully.  You must study if you expect to pass the PSI exam.

Once you have your license you will need the Michigan Residential Code Book
